Original black and white checkered floors, vibrant art, ultra sleek mani/pedi stations accompanied by modernistic pieces best describes the feng shui of Buff Beauty Bar, one of the most opulent salons to recently hit the CBD. The space, located on Carondelet Street, consisted of “an empty space with an old chair collecting sawdust” according to owners, Sarah Duffy and Catherine Alford.
The two met while employed at an uptown spa and after four months of working together, both ladies decided it was time to venture out on their own. Their mission was to provide high-end services at affordable prices for the person on the go. With that in mind, Buff Beauty Bar emerged. After much surveying and research to determine the right products and what people were looking for in a spa, what was originally meant to be a wax bar turned out to be a full service beauty bar. Aside from providing customers with complimentary mimosas, patrons can choose from a variety of services and products that include nail care, waxing, lunchtime peels, makeup application and an upcoming blow dry bar.
As self-proclaimed product junkies, Sarah and Catherine prefer products that are eco-friendly, organic, vegan and/or natural. One example is their main nail polish line, Spa Ritual, which is used in polish removal, mini-manicures and regular manicure and pedicure services. Other nail options include OPI Gel line, their most popular line to date. Their makeup is exclusive from the Los Angeles based line, Julie Hewett, a well known A-list Hollywood makeup artist who designed her own line of cosmetics and whose movie credits range from Hitchcock to Ocean's Eleven just to name a few.
For impeccable skin, Dr. Dennis Gross is the main skin care line used for salon in-house peels and continuing at home maintenance primarily because of his alpha and beta hydroxy peels. “It really fits in with our concept of being efficient and effective,” said Catherine. You can basically get a 20-minute peel and leave with a glowing face and tightened pores.” The peels are safe enough for sensitive skin and come in the options of regular and extra strength.
After my interview, I decide to indulge in an extra strength peel and was taken to a private and relaxing room in the back. Inside, the harmonious music physically lowered my blood pressure. I was asked to lay down on a comfortable massage table by Brittny, one of the friendliest aestheticians I’ve met, and she proceeded to remove my makeup. She used gentle, relaxing circular strokes that made me feel as though my face was getting a massage. Afterwards, she proceeded to apply the peel and I felt a slight tingle indicating the efficacy of it. After a couple of minutes, a neutralizer was applied to stop the reaction of the acid upon my skin.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that after every peel, a complimentary light makeup touch up consisting of an SPF 15 tinted moisturizer and lip balm is applied. Being the peel junkie that I am, I initially had my doubts regarding the efficacy of the peel as someone who is used to the strongest peels on the market from a dermatologist. When Brittny handed me the mirror, it was the moment of truth and I was simultaneously shocked and pleased at the results. From that moment, I became an official Dr. Dennis Gross convert.
